As the calendar turned over to 1996
and some UBC 916 members were looking forward to the
Local Union elections in June, a newsletter was
developed for a campaign tool and sent to the
membership every other week. As the typist for
this newsletter, I became quite involved in the
campaign.
Also, my husband was on the slate of
candidates as Financial Secretary/Asst BA. There
was great interest amongst the hopefuls in learning
the proper how-to of running a Union, yet there was
very little information available. No one seemed to
know (or they weren't telling) anything about any
labor laws. Much research needed to be done.
After the election, with no new
position to support, I turned my energies to
developing this website. Initially coming online in
Feb. '97 as UBC 916,
the site was renamed to UBC YES
in March '98 after much quibbling from incumbent UBC
916 officers who had been re-elected.
The site is a volunteer endeavor
operated and maintained by me, Barbara Baker,
aka BBaker, spouse of UBC 916 member Terry Baker.
It is not an official site of the United Brotherhood
of Carpenters & Joiners of America. However, it is
dedicated to the preservation, promotion and/or
support of the Brotherhood while serving to assist
and/or educate its membership.
